M.U.T. Musical und Theater Neumarkt e.V. is an contemporary amateur theatre society, located in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz in Bavaria, Germany.[1]

Profile and History

The society was formed in 2011.[2] It has specialized on performing musicals that are written and composed by members of the society. M.U.T. does not only stage musical comedies, but also musical plays with serious subjects. For example, the musical play "Der letzte Brief" (Engl. The last letter) was inspired by the fate of a true Jewish family from Neumarkt who suffered persecution by the national socialist regime.[3]

Many members of the M.U.T. society are (former) teachers and students of the local grammar school Ostendorfer-Gymnasium, where the tradition of staging self-created musicals was started in the 1990s.[4]

Librettos and music were written mainly by members of M.U.T. society. The author of the musical plays is Franz X. Müller, amongst the composers are Max J. Gmelch, Andreas Flierl, Marcel Estermann, Armin Schidlo, Michael Dorner, and others.[6]

Society purpose

In its club rules, the society states as its objectives popular education, the fostering of art and culture in the county and the gathering of people of all ages while doing music, dance, acting and joint creative work. The society also wishes to strengthen social skills and encourage people to take over responsibility.
