L&H Nathan
L&H Nathan was a leading costume company in London in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The company were quick to realise the growing amateur theatrical market in the 1840s and began to supply a range of goods for amateur theatre performances, including costumes, wigs, make-up, paper scenery, and temporary 'fit-up' theatres.
Nathans was founded in Tichborne Street, London, in 1790 by Lewis Nathan, a tailor. Little is known about the early decades of the business, but in 1843 Jacob Nathan expanded by opening a special branch at 94 Berwick Street. In 1846 the business was taken on by Lewis Jacob Nathan and in 1845, in conjunction with his brother Henry, L&H Nathan was first named.[1]
Nathans supplied a range of professional and amateur productions.
